Decision support systems (DSSs) can deliver the technology of management and the relevant knowledge managers need to get their jobs done. Most of today's DSSs support the choice phase of decision making. Enhanced DSSs, known as management support systems (MSSs), are attempting to fill the gaps in decision-making support not provided by traditional DSSs. This article examines the MSS concept, explains its inherent shortcomings and unresolved integration problems, and proposes an alternative approach designed to give executives complete decision-making support.
