The past few years have seen several developments that affect the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of pneumonia, among them the emergence of multiple antibiotic resistance in pneumococci, the increasing use of antipneumococcal vaccine, and the higher than previously recognized incidence of Legionnaires' disease. Their full impact is not yet apparent, but they are certain to affect medical practice significantly.
