The New England Deaconess Hospital has pioneered the practice in the United States of mixing lipid emulsion in total parenteral nutrition (TPN) solutions. This delivery system is referred to as 3-in-1 or total nutrient admixtures. Due to the complex medical-surgical patients cared for, a large number of whom are placed on TPN, this approach offers significant advantages to nurses dealing with TPN patients.
