Alcohol has been a suspected teratogen for centuries, but only recently has a relationship been recognized between maternal alcohol intake and the characteristic pattern of malformations in the fetus. The offspring of chronically alcoholic women are at highest risk, but clinical studies show that even moderate drinking during the first few weeks of pregnancy can adversely affect fetal development.
