This group of perinatal infections poses many problems: incidence can be only crudely estimated; definitive diagnosis requires special laboratory tests, most of which are not easily available; symptomatology is usually minimal and often nonspecific; prognosis is grave. Although the past decade has seen advances in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, recognition of the extent of the problem remains an urgent need for its eventual solution.
