The use of dietary fluoride supplements for children in communities not served by water fluoridation should be encouraged. Given on a daily basis from birth until eruption of all permanent teeth, supplement dosage must be adjusted for age. Dosages in excess of this recommended schedule will likely result in dental fluorosis. Erupted teeth will benefit from topical fluoride regardless of the age of the individual. Use of fluoride dentifrices is recommended as an added benefit to the usual oral hygiene practices. Daily topical fluoride rinses may be prescribed for individuals who exhibit recurrent dental caries.
