Organized by the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute in cooperation with other Societies, the Fifth International Symposium on Advanced Nuclear Energy Research was held in Mito, Japan, March 10–12, 1993. Some 300 scientists (about 30 coming from outside Japan) attended and the symposium covered all aspects of research and applications of neutrons. In this respect the symposium was original (at least for me) and took its theme from the refurbishing of the JAERI facilities at Tokai, where the old reactor has actually been replaced by a new model—seeNeutron News, Vol. 1, No. 2 (1990).
