The long-term effects (1–3 years) of intensive initial counseling of parents of children with meningomyelocele were examined. Mothers who received such counseling (N = 7) were significantly better informed overall on 13 informational areas compared with those whose initial counseling was less intensive (N = 7). Further research is necessary on parental comprehension and retention of medical information.
