The present report describes the development and laboratory and human testing of a new fast-swelling and pressureresistant laminaria made of a hydrogel polymer, Hypan. In 50 patients a threefold transversal swelling of the device without change in the length was observed within 3 to 4 hours after insertion. The mechanical and physical characteristics of this new synthetic polymer provide safety and structural stability during removal from the cervical canal.
