Cost is a big factor in the drug subsidy decisions made by the New Zealand pharmaceutical management agency, Pharmac, according to the agency's medical director, Dr Win Bennett. Speaking at theNew Zealand Pharmaceutical Industry Congress[Auckland, New Zealand; February 1995], Dr Bennett acknowledged that the cost of subsidising a drug is balanced against other treatments that the regional health authorities would like to purchase.
