This paper discusses antiviral therapy of disease due to four viral agents: herpes simplex encephalitis, herpes zoster (dermatomal and disseminated), subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), caused by measles virus, and progressive rubella panencephalitis (PRP), a rare disease caused by rubella virus. The clinical description and diagnosis of these entities are reviewed extensively elsewhere (1–4).
