Many deaths of neonates with gastrointestinal perforations are preventable if the physician is alert to signs and symptoms that suggest both the presence and the site of such lesions; awareness must extend to“preperforative”situations. Decompression of a severely distended infant via catheter is often a necessary maneuver to gain time for laparotomy and definitive surgery.
