This review of several early motor milestones attempts to define the neural circuitry involved in producing these behaviors and to correlate neuroanatomic maturation of this circuitry with the emergence of mature motor abilities. An understanding of the genetic and environmental effects on this circuitry could improve the prevention and treatment of developmental disorders.
