Advances in the management of acute respiratory failure are emerging on two fronts. First, an increasing understanding of the pathogenesis of the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) raises the possibility of specific new therapies. Second, developments in ventilation, membrane oxygenation techniques and novel new therapies such as nitric oxide inhalation offer promise of greater therapeutic success.
