The observed relative frequency of visual double stars in the solar neighbourhood decreases with increasing distance. This diminution is quantitatively explained as result of the most efficient selection effect, which is caused by the resolving power of the great refractors. The observed values are in good agreement with such theoretical curves for which the true double star frequency is accepted to be 40% to 80%.
