The lacrimal drainage system includes the nasolacrimal duct, lacrimal sac, and canaliculi. Stenosis or obstruction at any portion of the lacrimal drainage system or an impaired lacrimal pump may cause bothersome epiphora. Tear stasis may also be associated with ocular or adnexal infections. This article reviews the recent literature pertaining to anatomy and physiology, pathology, and clinical evaluation and treatment, as well as complications of lacrimal drainage-system disorders.
