Chronic renal failure is frequently accompanied by endocrine abnormalities which may result in infertility and impotence. Many of these hormonal abnormalities persist during dialysis therapy but may improve in the presence of a functioning renal allograft. A better understanding of the hormonal changes accompanying end-stage renal disease and the effects of immunosuppressive agents on them has improved the ability to restore sexual and reproductive function to renal transplant recipients.
