AbstractThe transformation of the economies of central and eastern Europe could represent a watershed in European environmental policy. By learning from the experiences of the West, they could set new standards in sustainable development. This is especially evident in Hungary, although as Sandor Kerekes and Richard Welford discuss, social and economic priorities are likely to prevent this opportunity from being realised.
