As with other nursing problems, management of dermal ulcers requires interventions that are logical, systematic and theory‐based. This article outlines five key principles that guide the nurse in treatment of dermal ulcers. Using knowledge of normal skin function and normal healing processes, a model is presented for assessment, identifying treatment goals, and selecting treatment options.
