Retrolental fibroplasia appears to be reemerging as a significant risk in premature infants, particularly those weighing less than 2,000 grams. Recent work suggests constitutional differences in susceptibility to oxygen toxicity. The author's clinical trials confirm that vitamin E, used therapeutically as well as prophylactically, can reduce both the incidence and severity of disease in these high-risk babies.
