In transparent medium, beta particles and the electrons which are released under certain conditions by the interaction of gamma radiation with the medium, cause Čerenkov radiation. Changes induced by two wavelength shifters (β-Naphthol and 1-Amino-2-naphthol-4 sulphonic acid) are assessed. Color quenching solutions inhibit more widespread use of Čerenkov counting while chemical quenching is shown not to be a problem. The counting efficiency is improved by using polyethylene vials, incorporating wavelength shifters and by using a pulse summation technique.
