The central role of immune complexes is well established. However, many other factors also seem to be involved: T-lymphocyte suppressor function, polyclonal B-cell activation, sex hormones, histocompatibility determinants, and infectious and other exogenous agents. Their elucidation promises better understanding of how the disease occurs and better ability to manage or prevent it.
