The harnessing of youth into one monolithic organization is a constant preoccupation of totalitarian states. Such states succeed in channelling through the youth organization all the socially mobile and career oriented adolescents. On the other hand, the overt stress on ideological conformity accounts for much exploitation of the organization for advancing personal careers, especially when the organization has been imposed from above, as in Czechoslovakia.
