AbstractThe difference in the treatment of firms in business management and in economics is marked: in the former they are complex organisms and in the latter simple entities. This essay introduces the concept of core capabilities which mould organizational capabilities. Technical advance has been instrumental in economic growth but it could not have taken place without new patterns of organization to guide and support the R&D.
