It is well established that mast cells trigger immediate hypersensitivity reactions by release of histamine from cytoplasmic granules and generation of leukotrienes and prostaglandins from membrane phospholipids. More recently, it has been learned that there are at least two mast cell populations with different mediator products, receptor targets, and functions.
