Employment opportunities for engineers in activities directly related to the clinical practice of medicine are discussed. The specific areas considered are “traditional” clinical engineering, computer applications, and highly specialized technologies, such as neuromuscular prostheses. For each area, the activities the practitioner would engage in, the responsibilities he would assume, appropriate training, and possible organizational positions within the health-care delivery system are discussed. While the greatest need at present appears to be for clinical engineers, it is suggested that other areas of activity may become important in the future.
