AbstractThe requirement of two blood meals prior to egg maturation (i.e. pre‐gravid development) was investigated inAnopheles merusmosquitoes in a coastal village in Kenya. An average pre‐gravid rate of 67% was recorded in 389 initially engorged females. A realistic method for estimating mosquito survival rates on the basis of nulliparous and parous age classes was modified to account for the nulliparous pre‐gravid component. The effect of the pre‐gravid age class was to change the estimated survival rate per oviposition cycle from 0.43 ± 0.04 to 0.57 ± 0.05. The estimated length of the oviposition cycle was 2 days.
