Why do some antibodies attack viruses in the circulation, others initiate the phagocytosis of bacteria, and still others trigger allergic reactions? The answers to this question have emerged from studies relating the structure of the immunoglobulin classes—IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE, and IgD—to their biologic function. These relationships are described, with particular stress on IgE.
