There is no longer excuse for the supracervical hysterectomy except in a very few specially selected cases. The incidence of cancer in the cervix left behind is much like that in the intact uterus. But the treatment of cancer in the cervical stump is more difficult than in the cervix of the whole uterus for anatomic reasons which develop as the result of operation. In any event, the woman with the remaining cervical stump deserves the same careful periodic examinations for the early detection of cancer as does the woman with an intact uterus.
