At sufficiently high doses, ionizing radiation can cause cancer in nearly any animal or human tissue. However, the carcinogenic risks associated with the various sources and types of radiation are far from clear-cut. Half a century of studies in populations exposed medically, occupationally, and militarily have yielded a wide spectrum of positive, negative, and equivocal results.
