Discussion of the definition of an obstetrician-gynecologist is presented and a pragmatic approach urged. Organizational roles in the selection, education, certification, and continuing education of the specialist in obstetrics and gynecology are briefly reviewed and commented upon. A plea is made for continuing liaison among the major organizations within the specialty to resolve issues of conflicting interests and to promote consensus decisions.
