Gynecological surgery has long reflected sexual attitudes. In late nineteenth century America gynecologists performed a number of operations for the discipline of women deemed sexually unruly. One of them was female circumcision intended to cure and prevent masturbation. Female circumcision never caught on as did the circumcision of male infants and mothers' resistance may well have been a major reason.
