The demonstration of an upregulation of CRH receptors in the cerebral cortex after a decrease in cortical CRH content in Alzheimer's disease indicates the physiologic relevance of the receptor site. It is consistent with the concept that CRH acts as a neurotransmitter in normal cortical functions and that disease of this peptidergic system may be important in certain manifestations of dementia.
