The “tunneling” meeting, officially known as the Workshop on Quantum, Atomic and Molecular Tunneling in Solids, was hosted by KFA Jiilich from September 3–5. 1997. This workshop regularly attracts many “old hands” and a healthy number of newcomers. While there are always some new fundamental aspects of tunneling to be discussed, the majority of presentations were concerned with the exploitation of tunneling as a probe in polymers, small biologically important molecules, and surfaces, as well as the more usual crystalline environments. Experiment, theory and numerical modeling are now moving forward together and we look forward to an exciting future in this field.
