Much progress has been made in the classification of chronic hepatitis syndromes, based on correlation of specific histologic features with progressive liver destruction. Four etiologic subtypes have been defined—drug-induced, hepatitis B, non-A, non-B hepatitis, and autoimmune hepatitis. The last paradoxically is least understood etiologically and pathophysiologically but the most amenable to specific therapy.
