AbstractIn the evolution of every profession, there comes a time when its practitioners begin to examine formally those characteristics that underlie the craft's claim to professional status. Institutional researchers have been meeting now in formal gatherings for over a quarter century, and it is not surprising that attention is more frequently being paid to such characteristics. We are entering a period in which institutional research is becoming conscious of its professionalism as a formal subject of inquiry.
