This paper examines the optimal response of individual firms to a participatory stabilization scheme such as the one covering the Canadian cattle industry. A static partial‐equilibrium model of firm behavior is employed under uncertainty, where a competitive risk‐neutral firm employs a two‐stage production technology. The principal findings are that a marginal increase in the size of a cow‐calf firm's breeding herd could increase the short‐run own‐price elasticity of supply. Accordingly, the optimal response of a risk‐neutral firm to a mean‐preserving decrease (increase) in the variability of output prices would be a reduction (increase) in the size of the breeding herd. These adjustments would be associated with enrollment in (or withdrawal from) a participatory stabilization scheme that is actuarially fairL'auteur etudie la reaction individuelle optimale des entreprises a un programme participatif de stabilisation comme celui qui est en vigueur dans l'industrie bovine canadienne.
