The importance of the impact of fluctuations in export prices on the economies of countries with a heavy dependence on the export of primary commodities has been the subject of considerable discussion in the past, particularly with reference to developing countries. This paper examines some of the evidence of the macro‐economic importance of fluctuating export prices in New Zealand, a small, relatively developed country. The effects of price variation are shown to be significant, and it is suggested that small developing countries may find, as development proceeds, that export price fluctuations bring increasing problems of economic instability.
