Technology-dependent children being cared for at home is a recent phenomenon. Advances in technology and health care have increased the number of technology-dependent children and have prolonged their survival. These children, who would have succumbed to their illnesses 5 to 10 years ago, are not only surviving but going home and participating in family, community, and school life (Grammatica, 1989)
