Positive interference by amino acids in the determination of ammonium in soil extracts by automated indophenol methods can be minimised by using the nitroprusside catalysed reaction. Hydrolysis of amino acids is virtually eliminated because this reaction enables the use of low sample volumes, reagent concentrations and reaction temperatures.
