One of the principal aims of surface science is to arrive at an understanding of the oxidation and corrosion of metals and the behaviour of surface catalysts. Considerable progress has been made in this direction in recent years. It is shown how a greater knowledge of the structure and chemistry of crystal surfaces is now leading to an understanding of the surface chemical reactions which are involved in these technologically important processes.
