This review was undertaken as a prelude to an extensive Australian investigation into smoking and associated ill-health in industry. A number of reports have related smoking to sickness absence in general, to absence attributed to respiratory disease, and to respiratory symptoms and dysfunction in occupational groups. There is need for further investigation, including control of other variables, in order to determine more clearly the consequences of smoking to the worker and to the industry and community in which he works.
