A new characteristic functionV‡, the phase characteristic, is defined. The derivatives of a certain aberration function related to it are exactly equal to the ray-aberrations. As an application the condition for local isoplanatism is considered. Some points relating to the displacement, as derived from different characteristic functions, are discussed.
