The evil eye phenomenon, belief that the gaze of the human eye can bring illness and misfortune to people, has a core of cross-cultural similarities but it also has many intercultural variations. The evil eye figures prominently in the folk health models of many clients. Knowledge about the evil eye phenomenon will help community health nurses to better understand client orientations to health and illness, to empathize with clients and to establish more effective nurse-client relationships.
