AbstractMeasuring the use of key technologies by industry provides policy-makers with information about which industries and regions are most advanced in this respect. When questions are added on barriers and incentives to the investment in these technologies, the results support policy development and the monitoring of existing policies, especially in the areas of trade, competitiveness and productivity. As standards develop for international comparisons, surveys of technology use are providing a body of information different from that derived from surveys of research and development and of innovation. As a result, technology use, especially in manufacturing, is becoming an established economic indicator.
