Signs and symptoms of cancer that are not directly caused by the primary tumor or its metastases are not all that common, but they are important. They may be the earliest indication that a patient has cancer or needs further therapy. Equally significant the manifestations of these paraneoplastic syndromes may be confused with those of metastases, which leads to inappropriate and inadequate treatment.
