If we want to understand cancer, we have to understand the genetics of the cancer cell. The study of malignancies in which genetic rearrangements are specific and consistent has yielded surprising and rewarding results. It has been hypothesized that oncogenes are involved in the regulation of normal cell proliferation, but their physiology remains to be determined.
