The focus is on two substances of primary significance in the etiology of treatable hypertension—DOC and aldosterone. Summarized is the evidence for the control of these mineralocorticoids by the pituitary and the renin-angiotensin system. The differences in the response patterns of DOC and aldosterone provide important bases for the diagnosis and treatment of a number of clinical hypertensive syndromes.
