Whether genital mycoplasmas play a causative role in G U tract infections is still an open question, but their link to low birthweight appears well established, especially for T strains. Low-birth weight infants have significantly higher colonization rates; mean birthweights of infants born to mothers positive for T strains early in pregnancy are significantly lower than those of babies whose mothers were negative.
