The complex and differing mechanisms of action of this large group of cardiovascular drugs are not yet entirely understood, but the various effects of calcium entry blockers on conduction tissue and on coronary and other vascular smooth muscle indicate that they may be useful in many clinical problems. Clinical trials of nifedipine, diltiazem, and verapamil are promising.
